First Ammendment-School Uniforms

Two years later, of the 5,500 middle and high school teachers who were surveyed at the National Association of Secondary School Principals Annual Conference, 70 percent said they favored the idea of school uniforms(Kohn, What to Look for in a Classroom, 1998). While many parents argue that the implementation of uniforms is infringing upon the freedom of their children, principals and school administration beg to differ. Superintendent Jane Smith put it well when she said, "We don't think the clothes you wear sum up your expression. There are so many other ways to express your individuality. To me, that argument just doesn't add up" (Associated Press, 1999). Uniforms have caused significant decreases in student discipline issues as a whole. Eighty-five percent of principals who have uniforms say they even increase their image in the community (www.freedomforum.org). .
While only three percent of the nation's public schools have required uniforms, almost all have some type of dress code. But problems are constantly arising with enforcing them. In one particular high school in Columbia, South Carolina, they make kids who violate the dress code wear a bright orange shirt that says, "I violated the dress code. I will come to school dressed properly tomorrow." And the students have to pay for them. At my high school, if you were not dressed appropriately they would make you wear your gym uniform all day. Different schools are trying to come up with so many different strategies to enforce their dress code, but why not just do away with it all together? If every student wore the same thing, then there would be no issue of width of straps or length of shorts.
When walking through the doors of a public school, it is very easy to differentiate the various cliques. You have the jocks and cheerleaders who all dress in name brand clothes, the "Goths" whose apparel is all centering around the color black, the nerds with their high-water pants and pocket protectors, and many more.
