Language is very difficult for myself and others like me. My parents and the generation before me had a hard time learning other languages and to communicate well with others. During my twenty years of growing up I have seen many difficult situation and problems that I have encountered. One of the situations that have changed my life is when I was a little child. I remember my grandfather was very sick and I didn't know what to do. All I knew to do was dial 911, after doing so the paramedics arrived shortly. The paramedics asked me what was wrong and I couldn't explain to them what was wrong. My grandfather told me what was wrong and what he needed in my native tongue, but I was unable to translate the message to the paramedics. As a result my grandfather was hospitalized, and eventually led to his passing. .
After this event, I was motivated to learn and master the English language in order to better prepare myself for the future. This event made me understand that I must go out and network with other people in order to learn from them. The role of language in my life is monumental, not only that, I feel that the English language is a barrier that is stopping me from being all that I can be. I know that in order for me to understand and used the English language properly is by going to college. By going to college I will be able to build on my vocabulary skills and be able to convey my message to others in order to help my family and myself. .
I also remember how difficult if was for my parents to communicate with the American public due to the lack of the English language. Some examples of the difficulties that my parent came across was when my mom was at a local grocery store trying to by soap, and she didn't know how to ask for help; she ended up coming home empty handed due to the lack of communication skills. Not only that, I remember my father gave some money to my mom and said that it was $100, but it was only a $10 bill, my mom then decided to go to the store.
