This holds true with nature - tourism trends in the United States as well, as it is estimated that in 1999, there were 402 million recreational visits (both domestic and international) to the national parks system alone, many of which were Americans. As the United States has many national and state parks of its own across the nation, these tend to be popular attraction sites requiring less travel than destinations in other countries. This popularity, however, is the reason that many of the more accessible national and state parks are overwhelmed during the peak summer months. For example, in Minnesota, where problems resemble those of other states, visits to the state's 64 parks increased from 6 million to 10 million in three years. Ten of the parks are subject to continual overcrowding. Increased visitation to parks nationwide has resulted in more roads, more parking lots, and more concessions built in the protected areas, frequently decreasing the aesthetic value of the park.
The amount of visitors that parks receive can be astounding and even discourage people from touring these areas, as one "survey of American tourists (reported that) 40% of respondents to a national survey said they did not visit parks and recreation areas because of crowding, and 25% said the areas were too polluted," (Ryan 1999: 24). A pressing point is brought about upon learning of the magnitude of the ecotourism industry and the crowding that can occur as a result. One discouraging account of national parks today describes the process by which they are becoming overrun by claiming that tourism in parks today.is often little more than an extension of the city and its lifestyle transform onto a scenic background. At its extreme in Yosemite Valley or at the South Rim of the Grand Canyon, for example, long lines waiting in restaurants, supermarkets, taverns, fashionable shops, night - life, and prepared entertainment.
