Eveline

One thing I noticed in James Joyce's "Eveline" is that the main character only wants to marry the man she is dating to escape the pain and anguish that she grew up in. Eveline growing up has put up with watching her father abuse her mother and when she dies, Eveline becomes the victim. Due to this, I believe that Joyce infers that she only wanted to leave home for Buenos Aires to leave these memories behind. She does not love him, but simply wants to escape. However, although she wants to escape, she decides to stay because of her fear of going into the unknown.
Eveline at first seems very excited to leave her home. She does not feel that anyone in Dublin respects her and cares for her. Joyce portrays this by not even mentioning her name, Eveline, until the thought of moving to an unknown country with a man that she is to marry. At home, she has no protector from her father; one of her brothers has died, and the other brother has gone into a job that is far away from the home. With no savior from the threatening behavior of her father, moving away with Frank seems to be the best choice. .
Unfortunately, Eveline does not love him. Frank is merely an escape from the pain of her world in Dublin. She wants to believe that moving to a distant, unknown, and new world would give her a pleasant life, and she may even fall in love with Frank. This false love for Frank is her problem that causes her to stay. Why does she stay is the question that so puzzles me. I have two ideas upon this question of behavior. One belief I hold is that since Eveline does not love Frank, she chooses to stay home in fear of being trapped in a world that is far worse than the one she is presently in. She may feel that her husband-to-be may become abusive in the relationship. This fear could describe the reason why she goes pale and feels that he is drowning her. With these feelings, she only feels a more pressured and burdensome life.
