Soma, the magical ultimate drug is what keeps the population from revolting against the government and its ways. The drug is at the forefront if their daily lives providing freedom from lives and evilness. The drug is used as a form of recreation. Its purpose is to encourage when any great emotions beings to arise; especially those such as hate and love. They are condition to know that as soon as any sign of emotions begin to occur, they should take the "Calming Soma." The conditioning process also allows them to be provided with an environment that prevents them from participating in social activities that they would rather not participate in because of insecurities and just rather not be bothered with. The conditioning process begins at a very young age. Class-consciousness is taught through hypnopaedia (the repletion of phrases during sleep) for all classes. The entire society is conditioned to avoid any type of intense emotional contact by taking their "pacifying" soma. (Needham, Joseph).
The names of the different classes are letters in the Greek alphabet, ranging from Alpha Plus being the best rank, to Epsilon Minus being the worst. Each identifies the class or rank in their society. Alphas and Betas remain as individuals, as for Gammas, deltas and Epsilons are grouped. (Needham, Joseph).
1984 was written as a warning against the results of having a totalitarian state or a state where the government has full control over the people, over the actions, and how you do it; there is no individuality. Winston bears the keenness of his mistakes, the crime of individuality and dissention. A Brave New World is a novel about the future. Huxley seems to feel that society is progressing towards a materialistic and superficial end, in which all things of real value will be squashed and people lives will depend upon small, trivial things as he expresses in his book.
