This summer nineteen Mexican immigrants hidden inside the trailer of an eighteen wheeler suffocated, after being abandoned by the cab driver. He was supposed to have smuggled them across the U.S. border. Although this incident sparked much disbelief, pity, and sorrow around the country, few people actually know how many immigrants put their lives in danger everyday to cross the borders of the United States. Even those who cross over legally often have to go to great lengths. You wonder just what it is that is so great about this country that makes people risk their very lives and everything they have to be here. What is the motivation? In my opinion, the reason one would risk his life to get here is because of the many opportunities and chances for a better life. .
First, we are a safe and privileged nation. We are fortunate enough to have luxuries many people elsewhere are without. The majority of families in America own a house and one or two cars. Something we think as simple and necessary as a computer may be considered a great luxury elsewhere. We are often ignorant about what it feels like to never have enough to eat, constantly worry about warfare, walk through sewage and trash, or even to not have running water and electricity. We also have free education that is available to anyone and everyone who wants to learn. American students are encouraged to further their knowledge up to and through college, where they can learn any profession desired.
Next, America is the most diverse and unified country in the world. We have so many different cultures and languages that it's hard to name them all. Since we are so diverse and integrated , everyday is a new chance to learn and experience more with new cultures. And even though we all have such different backgrounds, we are still able to remain united and to help each other out.
Third and finally, Americans have freedom. We have the freedom to practice or not practice any religion we want to, we have the freedom of speech and of the press, we have the right to assemble peaceably, to protest anything we feel is unjust, and we even have the right to bear arms.
