Differences and/or Similarities The 1960's Civil Rights Movement.
~For the "50s, the decade began largely in 1954 when the organization NAACP dealt with the Supreme Court in cases such as Brown vs. the Board of Education, in which it was declared that, "separate educational facilities were unequal and therefore unconstitutional." While one decade, the "50s, seemed to first bring out the idea of desegregation, the other, the "60s, actually carried out this idea by forming protests and marches and making it known to others that African-Americans were out for what they wanted and deserved. ~For the "60s, the quest for civil rights began in 1960 when the first mass march was held in Tennessee after the bombing of the Meharry's Hubbard Hospital - over 3,000 marchers participated and started the first of what would later be a long line of marches all over the country.
~Early 1955 - This was when John had first heard the powerful voice of Martin Luther King Jr., a young minister from Atlanta, preaching (with social gospel) about the problems of right then, which John seemed to think was the most important thing for society. People who would soon play the most important roles in society during the Civil Rights Movement were just popping up in the "50s. Soon after, people began to take actual action and form groups (SNCC) to get their much needed freedoms. ~The "60s marked a time when John met many great men and women, all devoted to the cause. The Presidents also affected the lives of many black citizens, and the things these presidents did to help the cause, where both the Civil Rights Act and the Voting Rights Act.
~August 1955 - Emmett Till Case - A fourteen year old black boy was murdered because he said "bye, baby," to a white woman - first real eye opener and something that the black community could no longer ignore. Although many hoped that they would no longer have to deal with the violence, things seemed to get worse over the years and into the "60s, with more beatings and murders.
