The Birth of My Son

The birth of my baby was such a frightening but rewarding experience. Early on the morning of November 21st, I entered the doctor's office for what seemed to be a routine visit. After finishing the vital signs there was a rise in my blood pressure along with edema. The signs made it obvious to the doctor that this pregnancy had taken a toll on my body and it was time to get the baby out. The decision was made to deliver the baby and I was taken to the maternal newborn floor for an induction. Shortly after arriving to the floor the nurses and corpsman were preparing for the big event. There were stacks of papers to fill out and then finally it came time for the corpsman to poke and prod at my arms for the intravenous line. The contractions were coming one after another and it felt as though they were going to last forever. I admit after going through two previous pregnancies this one was very different. .
After hours of enduring painful contractions the time came for the epidural. The pain from the extremely long and sharp needle was a good pain compared to the contractions. As the contractions came closer together the baby's fetal heart rate began to drop. Although my contractions were coming closer together and stronger, the doctor made an effort to keep my attention focused away from the fetal monitors. The time went by very fast and nine hours had already passed by. The discomfort continued and then finally it was time to begin pushing this little miracle out. Nine minutes of pushing was all it took to deliver my beautiful baby boy into the world. To sum it up childbirth was a very scary feeling, but the joy of my new baby boy was worth all the trouble.
