The Biological Aspects of Beauty

" This proves that symmetry is seen as beauty and that it does attract for purposes of sex. The biological theory of sex is that sex is for reproduction purposes. University of Michigan researchers also found that health is associated to facial symmetry. They had 100 students keep a diary over a two month time period. They concluded that the least symmetrical people had the most physical and emotional complaints. This again relates to beauty being biological. The biological theory of this is that humans find symmetrical faces more attractive because they give the impression that the person is healthy. Cowley also writes about psychologist Victor Johnston, who through research has proved that the faces found most attractive are extreme. Cowley writes, "As a rule, he finds that an ideal female has a higher forehead than an average one, as well as fuller lips, a shorter jaw and a smaller chin and nose." According to an article called "Isn't She Lovely?" by Brad Lemley, Johnston says, "In females, estrogen makes the hips, breasts and lips swell. So large lips, breasts, and hips combined with a small jaw are telling you that I have an abundant supply of estrogen, so I am a fertile female." In the article The Biology of Beauty" Cowley writes, "The tiny jaw that men favor in women is essentially a monument to estrogen-and, obliquely, to fertility." He also writes, "Likewise, the heavy lower face that women favor in men is a visible record of the surge in androgens (testosterone and other male sex hormones) that turns small boys into 200-pound spear-throwers." This proves that that beauty is biological. Both men and women find features attractive that imply that the person is healthy and ready and able to reproduce healthy offspring. In the article "Isn't She Lovely?" Brad Lemley writes, "Actor Brad Pitt, widely regarded as a modern paradigm of male attractiveness, is a wide-jaw guy.
