Great Expectations- To be or not to be

As his wealth grows, Pip begins to look down upon and almost forget about Joe and their friendship. Even though very disappointed at the time, Joe still greatly values their friendship. Joe shows his everlasting care for Pip when Pip grows very ill and is in debt. Joe quickly pays Pip's debts so Pip would not be punished. Very surprised with Joe's extreme thoughtfulness Pip says, " I had never dreamed of Joe's having paid the money; but, Joe had paid it, and the receipt was in his name." (472). This shows how Joe taught Pip that in life one will always need someone to go to and be able to count on; no friendship should ever be looked down upon or forgotten.

This affects Pip because her cruelty towards men, leads Pip on and makes him believe wrong things. When Pip visits Satis House, Estella messes with Pip's emotions and tricks his mind. Pip says, " She looked at me like I was a dog in disgrace. I was so humiliated, hurt, spurned, offended, angry." (62).
