The Old MAn With Enormous Wings

No one could offer him a bed or a nice meal or just give him comfort. I often thought how lonely he must have been. I was glad when he flew away in the end. I hope he went back to heaven where the other angels are and where he will be happy. Elisenda was happy also; however she was happy for a different reason. "She kept watching him even when she was through cutting the onions and she kept on watching until it was no longer possible for her to see him, because then he was no longer an annoyance in her life but an imaginary dot on the horizon of the sea" (Marquez, 327).
The setting is a poor South American Village overtaken by sadness due to rain that had lasted for several days. The village is full of a community that lacks knowledge, education, and seems to be looking for entrainment in other people's hardships. The dreariness of the setting last throughout the story, even when the reader learns the boy is going to live. Even the priest who one would think would be educated and know enough to recognize an angel has to write letters and wait on replies from church elders, all the while letting the town's people treat this man like he is a circus exhibit. The town's people appear to have nothing to do but go around looking for curious and amazing ways to pass there time. It was the arrival of a woman that has been turned into a spider for disobeying her parents that finally turned their entertainment away from the angel and onto to something just as sad and horrific as the man with enormous wings. .
The setting of the story remains depressing even as the child begins his journey to school. "When the child began school it had been some time since the sun and rain had caused the collapse of the chicken coop. The angel went dragging himself about here and there like a stray man. They would drive him out of the bedroom with a broom and a moment later find him in the kitchen" (Marquez, 2004, 326).
