Analyzing narrartor

Stories are one of the founding blocks of culture. Stories present morality tales and flights of fiction. The plot of often takes second hand to the presenter of the story. The narrator is a critical component to the telling of any narrative. In Gabriel Màrquez' "The Handsomest Drowned Man in the World- and William Faulkner's "A Rose for Emily- exhibit excellent use of narrator in slightly different ways. .
The "person- that the narrator takes in the story is different in each tale. In "A Rose for Emily- the narrator uses the pronoun "We- on several occasions. "We did not say,"" as well as "We believed she had to do that-(Faulkner 972). The narrator presents himself as a voice of the people while still remaining a single voice among them. He is a teller of myths and stories collected by each generation only to be passed down to the current time around Miss Emily's death. In the "Handsomest Drowned Man in the World- the narrator definite sense of omniscience. He relates the tale more as a tall tale than a rational account. The narrator brings about the inner thoughts and feelings of the people in description of the dead man. He never separates himself from the people as an outside observer.
Another aspect of the narrators that flows to both stories is a male toned narrator. In Miss Emily the narrator describes the actions of women in the town with a alien method. Almost bewildered by the actions of the women in the town. "The day after his death all the ladies prepared to call at the house and offer condolence and aid, as is our custom-(Faulkner 972). This phrase almost seems like he is criticizing the custom of the town. Like he was saying, "All them women are going to grieve."" The narrator of Handsomest Drowned Man also seems to be critical of the way that women in the town act. "The women who had dressed him, who had combed his hair, had cut his nails and shaved him were unable to hold back a shudder of pity when they had to resign to themselves to his being dragged along the ground-(Màrquez 1467).
