A Dolls House

The women of A Dolls House are portrayed as lower than man. Woman are portrayed as something as a possession than a significant other. Nora's husband Torvald views a women's purpose as to be a wife and a mother. The novel stresses the idea that in Victorian society the role of women is to please her husband and care for her children and that is their purpose in life. When Nora leaves in the end of the novel Torvald says that she must stay for the children as if that is her only purpose. Mrs. Linde also portrays the idea that a woman's purpose is her husband and her children. Mrs. Linde is empty and lives her life without a purpose. "Not even any sorrow or grief to live upon."(8) She has lost her husband and has no children so she feels empty and goes through her life without a feeling of fulfillment. Torvald views his wife as one of his possessions and not as the woman he loves. Torvald constantly calls Nora by pet name like little squirrel and skylark, but he always begins these phrases with my displaying the idea that Torvald believes that he has possession over his wife. Torvald feels that his wife is his and his alone and that she is his. .
Torvald does not see her a true person, but rather something that defines him. The novel displays the idea that a woman is defined and seen by the men in her life. Nora is constantly displayed and shown in the light of her father and her husband. Torvald constantly refers of Nora to her father and that her personality and actions are a correlation to him. "Naturally you are thinking of your father"(34) Torvald believes that a woman is shaped around the men in her life and not herself, thus Nora is not a person, but an object shaped by the men in her life. This idea is stressed in the symbol of the title of the novel as A Dolls House. Torvald sees Nora as a little doll of his that he can play with and keep. He believes that Nora is a doll and his house is her little toy house that he can furnish to try and keep her comfortable, but in the end it is still a false house and is artificial.
