The President's Commission Report on Human Cloning deals with two different ideas of the aspect of cloning. First, is the idea of cloning for children. The purpose behind this idea is to give infertile couples the opportunity to have children. While this type of cloning would be considered to be a blessing to many couples, it may be just asking for a disaster. By having the freedom to clone for the production of children, it will most likely cause those couples whom are able to conceive children, to want to clone a child. Cloning a child would allow for people to create the "perfect", ideal child. With this, there would be no uniqueness - no individuality. Cloning in order to create a "perfect" child was demonstrated in the film Gattaca.
In the film, Vincent, the main character, was conceived by a young couple the "real" way, instead of in a laboratory. Thus, he was destined to be a second class citizen along with all others who were born the "real" way. People born like Vincent are called faith births, degenerates or invalids. Just seconds after Vincent's birth, his DNA was analyzed and his parents were told that he had a 99% chance of having a heart disorder and was expected to die when he is 30.2 years old. In hearing this information, Vincent's parents decided to have another child through what was called "natural birth". This process involved careful genetic selection and manipulations in order to create the "perfect" child. The child was engineered from taking the best bits and pieces of the father and mother, producing a child that was "good enough" to acquire his father's name.
The second idea in The President's Commission Report on Human Cloning is for bioethical purposes. This means that clones would be made in order to replace defective organs. These would include: kidneys, livers, hearts, lungs, ect. This type of cloning could also be used for gene reconstruction. In other words, people would no longer have to worry about genetic disorders because they could be repaired and eliminated.
