Kennedy and the Cuban Crisis vs Johnson and Vietnam


After these actions, Khrushchev the Soviet Premier proclaimed that the US was "strangling the Cuban economy." He stated that any military intervention into Cuba would be resolved by Soviet missiles, which could reach mainland American in minutes. The United States responded by saying that the United States government would not tolerate any form of communism within the Western Hemisphere. .
             By October, the US stopped all trading with Cuba, and stated that it would defend its naval base at Guantanamo Bay. Worried that communism would spread to Guatemala or Nicaragua via the domino theory, the US started to patrol the Caribbean Sea on November 17th. When the US started to patrol the Caribbean Sea the US government released federal funds. These funds were for the relief and settlement of Cuban refugees to the US. Before Kennedy took office, a plan to overthrow Castro was discussed; Kennedy and his administration assumed that the Cubans would take up arms against the Communist regime in Cuba. This plan was known as the Bay of Pigs invasion. .
             The Bay of Pigs Fiasco, which lasted from April 17-22, 1961, was a huge failure. Still Kennedy persisted in attempting to overthrow Castro. Twelve Hundred Cuban exiles launched an attack, invading Cuba's Bay of Pigs. After three days, it failed miserably for numerous of reasons. A lack of good intelligence from the CIA, poor planning on behalf of the CIA, and equipment mismatches and an assumed perception of the Cubans automatically throwing arms up against the Regime contributed to this failure . As a result of this failure Castro wanted Soviet help, and the Soviets needed Castro to be a huge pawn in the Cold War. Kennedy's image was severely hurt because of this failed invasion. Also, it showed to Khrushchev that Kennedy was weak.
             On, October 22, 1962 when photographs taken from an American plane showed proof of missiles being installed in Cuba by the Soviets, Kennedy immediately ordered a naval "quarantine" against Cuba, and told the USSR that he wanted the missiles removed immediately .
