The Crucible What is the significance of Act 2 pages 50 - 55 to the play?

We see the religious theme developed in this scene because on page 55, when Reverend Hale is visiting the Proctor's at night. Reverend Hale asks Elizabeth if she knows all of the 10 commandments. When John is asked to repeat the commandments to Reverend Hale he misses out the commandment about adultery. Elizabeth has to remind him of this commandment as he realizes he has committed a sin but does not wish to say that commandment as he knows that the town would have condemned John for lying as it was a sin to lie in the 17th century. During the play we find out that John's wife Elizabeth was ill for quite some time. During this time John was unfaithful to Elizabeth and had an affair with Abigail Williams. This is why Abigail wants Elizabeth dead. This is a key scene in the play because it builds up tension between Proctor and Elizabeth and the horror that anybody can be accused of witchcraft. "I come from Rebecca Nurse's house," this shows that Reverend Hale has been to Rebecca nurse's house because she has been accused. It shows that even good people can be accused. "But sure we never loved the devil here," Elizabeth is showing her love for John in this scene as she is fighting on John's side, to ensure that Reverend Hale does not think that either John or Elizabeth are witches. Tension has already been building up in the previous scene as Mary Warren tells the Proctors about how she thinks that Goody Osburne is cursing her. Mary Warren also says to John, "I saved her life today!" pointing to Elizabeth as Elizabeth's name has been mentioned in court. This starts Elizabeth panicking and John realizes that Abigail has mentioned Elizabeth's name in court. This is a dramatic moment for Elizabeth when she realises that she has been mentioned in court. .
Reverend Parris shows a good example of everybody being religious, "In the book of record that Mr Parris keeps, I note that you are rarely in church on Sabbath day.
