As a nation, America is regressing in terms of how females are viewed in our society. Females are being portrayed, and expected to behave, as servants. My research question will run along the lines of how American popular culture promotes this servitude among women. For the purpose of this project I will use the music industry, television, and magazines to represent the popular culture. I will focus on these three main facets of American popular culture in order to prove my theory that popular culture does indeed endorse servitude among its female audience. .
One way in which my statement that pop culture endorses servitude can be supported is by the general theory of control. By glamorizing the idea of being controlled, pop culture is able to convince females that what they desire more than anything is to please men. The music industry, television, and magazines alike do this by showing the perks of serving men. Some perks advertised are the material goods (i.e. clothes, jewelry, and alcohol), while other focus more on emotional advantages (i.e. sense of security). Another marketing tool for being a servant is the common idea, in this patriarchal society, that men hold inclusive rights to females; and why shouldn't they be? "Men have seen girls' bodies in numerous sexy and emotionless displays, in everything from movies to television to advertising they are as inanimate as mountains and exist only to be conquered." (Asher). .
While there are many other avenues available to explore with regards to this topic, those are the two I have focused my research on thus far.
So, now that two the culprit has been identified, why should we care? First of all, over the half of the student body here at Centenary College are females. That makes over half of the student body possible victims of this cultural enslavement. If that is not valid a reason enough, nearly everyone attending this college will once day have children of their own.
