Mario the Magnificent


            shoots, he scores! Mario Lemieux has been a hockey hero ever since he was drafted to the Pittsburg Penguins in 1984 and brought the Penguins from a losing team to a winning team. He started his hockey career with a goal in his first shift and on his first ever shot in the NHL. He led the Penguins to 2 Stanley Cups in 1991 and 1992. During the 1992-1993 NHL hockey season Mario was diagnosed with Hodgkins Disease and had to undergo treatment for the disease and came back and continued to lead his team. Mario will always be recognized as a hockey hero. .
             Mario was diagnosed with a form of Hodgkins Disease in January of 1993. He went through much treatment to cure his disease. He was shocked and never expected this to happen to him but he never gave up and continued to go through his treatment. Most hockey players when they get a serious injury or get cancer they just give up, but Mario didn't. He soon began to prepare his return to the Penguins during the 1992-1993 season. He came back to lead his team to an NHL record of seventeen consecutive wins. Mario won the Hart Memorial Trophy (NHL most valuable player), the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy (qualities of perseverance and sportsmanship in the NHL), and the Lester B. Pierson Award (Most valuable player) after his courageous efforts during the season. .
             Mario played very little in the 1993-1994 season, and was forced to take the whole 1994-1995 season off because of a deteriorating back condition. He worked harder than any player during the time off he had because he did not want to quit. He came back in the 1995-1996 season better than ever. Mario scored sixty-nine goals and 161 points during the regular season. In the playoffs that same year he led his team to the eastern conference finals while having twenty-seven points in the eighteen playoff games. Mario's next season will be the season to remember.
             Mario came into the 1996-1997 season healthier than ever and it showed by leading the league in scoring for his sixth time with 122 points.
