Tanzania originated from two countries; Tanganyika and Zanzibar which united after Tanganyika, 1961, and Zanzibar, 1963, were granted independence from Britain. But in the 19th century Tanganyika and Zanzibar were two completely different nations. Although both nations were coastal areas and contact with other nations became quite frequent, neither country had considered becoming a united country until the 1900s. The first Europeans arrived in 1498 on the East African Coast in Vasco de Gama's, a Portuguese explorer, ships. And by 1506, Portugal controlled the entire coast along with all trade on the Indian Ocean. But the Portuguese had concentrated on Mombassa in Kenya by the 16th and 17th centuries. After the Portuguese had lost interest in Zanzibar and Tanganyika in the 18th century the Omanis took control and designated Zanzibar as their capital. After a short while Britain took an interest in the East African coast. But Germany also took interest in the same area and in 1890 it was decided that Britain would become a protectorate over Zanzibar and Germany would make Tanganyika a German colony. Eventually a rebellion broke out in 1905 in Tanganyika; the Germans attempted to calm the rebellions but were not successful until 1907. Along with the rebellions border disputes broke out between the Germans and British when WWI was declared and battles erupted along the borders eventually resulting in German victory. But after the war ended the Versailles peace talks deemed German East Africa as British land. The nations were finally put under the control of the United Nations Trusteeship after WWII but were still a British protectorate. In 1963 the nations united and became Tanzania.
