The Giver

I have read many books throughout my life. One of my all time favorites is The Giver written by Louis Laurie. This Book is about a Utopian society where everyone is the same and life is supposedly "perfect." I haven't met someone who has read this book and hasn't absolutely loved it. I would highly recommend this book to anyone.
In this book, A boy named Jonas lives in a community where everyone and everything is the same. There is no sun, just fluorescent lights in the sky. There are no hills and all land is kept flat. Even weather stays the same. Everyone sees in color and wears the same clothes. Though all these differences seem to be unthinkable, the worst of all is that people don't fully know the difference between right and wrong. No one knows of war or violence or hatred. All they know is their own community.
At twelve, everyone is assigned to a lifelong job. Jonas on the other hand is selected to be "The receiver of memory." This means that he will receive memories from a man preferred to be called the giver. These memories will be painful and wonderful experiences that no one else in the community has yet to see.
As the book goes on Jonas begins to realize that the world was better before people made it all the same. He wants to find a way to change it so that it will be as it was before but does not know how. The Giver tells him that once he leaves the community, his memories will leave his mind and disperse amongst the People in the community. Now knowing what he must do he prepares himself for the journey and leaves the community. .
This book was one of my favorite books because it showed us how we can believe something is rite not knowing that it is totally wrong. It also teaches us that there really is no such thing as a perfect place. Every society has its upsides and it down sides and a society is not complete without the two. .
