Women are then categorized into certain areas of society based on their ability to carry and give birth to children. This directly links to Gattaca in the sense that people living in this technologically dominated society are determined by the DNA. The genetically superior, valids, are allowed the most prestigious jobs and lifestyles. The genetically insuperior however are labeled as invalids, given humble, unsatisfying jobs that only exist to serve the valids and to keep their world comfortable, easier and cleaner.
Gattaca's protagonist is an invalid named Vincent who's one dream and desire is to become an astronaut at the famous Gattaca Space Station. The story line follows the same road as any other movie such as the conflicts Vincent has to overcome in order to succeed (such as the painful lengthening of his legs), slip-ups where the suspense and tension rises due to the audience's concern and fear for his exposure (the episode at the restaurant). Although, in the end Vincent gets through it all successfully. This successful ending also occurs in The Handmaids Tale with Offred, she had to endure much hardship in order to escape the world she had been forced into. Vincent, like Offred, appear to be caught just as the audience believes they had succeeded. In Offred's case she thought she was going to be taken away by the Eyes and in Vincent's case his DNA revealed his true identity at a critical moment. However like all audience pleasing texts, the protagonist gets away safely due to the compassion and help of another character. This scenario is used over and over again in film and literature because the audience is very familiar with it, it makes them feel good about themselves and their own self-worth.
In order to make a movie appear different, director have to give it a twist, use a new fresh idea that society will readily and willing relate to. Aliens director James Cameron took a very familiar genre (alien science fiction) and modified it in a way that was widely accepted.
