The play brings up the money end of getting married. Bianca will only get married after Lucentio bribes the father and convinces him that he is rolling in the dough. Hortensio could have had Bianca's hand if he had enough money. The marriage wasn't based on love, but what the father could get from the guys marrying the bride. The funny thing is a lot of people in today's society do marry for the financial gain or economics of the situation. The play that was written in the 1500's still is relevant today in 2003. One has to wonder if because of Katharina's father money is she the victim in the story? What would happen if she was poor? Katharina might not have been so paranoid about people liking her just for the bucks. .
With every dentist visit there is dental floss. The dental floss is the wax, twine that will make your gums bleed. Petruchio want to bleed the cash cow out of Katharina's dad.(that was udderly bad) He carefully bends the will of Katharina. Right from the beginning, he knows what he wants and how to get it. He was either an insane character or one of the most brilliant. In modern times he would have showed up to the wedding in flip flops and one of those tuxedo shirts. In a disturbing way this is a rather clever move. He sets up the marriage the way he wants it. The bride eventually realizes she can't win and quits. This guy has gall; however I have to believe this guy is a little twisted. He basically gets a mail order bride (some one he doesn't know) with a bad reputation for being nasty, and he has a plan. In essence the story is: .
Katharina: Grrr. "Katherine the Curst". A title for a maid, of all titles the worst. Grrr.
Petruchio: Shut your mouth you ignorant wretch that's the sun and this is the moon! . .
Katharina: (in a robot voice at first) I will obey. I am civilized .(back to normal voice) you are like a god to me, Petruchio.(back to robot voice) Your wish is my command.
