Now in the present modern period, science has revolutionized criminal identification with DNA, and computers now are helping to predict crime, and booking procedures and filing has advanced as well.
             There are many things that a patrol officer must do to prepare him or herself for life on the streets. Training exercises can help the patrol officer prepare and one of the first things to teach is ethics. Professional ethics must be taught because no enforcement agency can function properly without the public's support and assistance. The support of the people cannot be forced but won, and officers must win the support through professional conduct. The Code of Ethics was then created to be a guide and it is emphasized that the duty of a police officer is to serve refusing own pleasures and desires for the good of those in which they serve, and officers are required to follow this code of conduct. But being a police officer in a democracy means giving the average citizens rights as well. Training of a police officer starts 3-6 months before an officer takes to the streets. During training officers learn about laws, civil rights, investigating accidents and many more responsibilities. Supervisors will teach these officers what they need to know before beginning their patrol duties. The goals of training are to teach customer service, encourage individual achievement and teamwork. It is essential for any officer to receive in-class training, and to learn field training so that they may develop a way of handling situations that they will see on the streets everyday.
             When preparing for patrol duty there are many things you want to do. You always want to be as professional as possible starting with your appearance. You must also check things out before you leave your locker room. You should always check your calendar for court and other important dates. These should also be ample supplies in a police officers locker, and before going out officer should always check the mail slot, daily offense bulletin, beat file, bulletin board, missing persons, daily arrest sheets, computer printouts.
