The Game

In the bottom of the seventh inning, as the score is tied with three outs, you hear the bat smashing the ball with a cracking sound. Sending the ball flying through the night sky, like a rocket to the stars. As it shoots through the air going way back center field. The preparations and thoughts that go through your head will determine if it's another out or a game winning move. As you stand with your hands on your knees, squeezing the material on your pants, as you watched the swing of the batter before you, you try to predict which way the ball will go, by the timing of the swing and body position of the batter. Many things race through the head of an outfielder before a ball is hit. Where will it be thrown, are there runners on base, how many outs there are. .
After all these, it's time to focus on the ball that may be coming your way. As you stand slightly crouched over, with your hands on your knees, you see the ball come off the bat with tremendous power. At first you see the ball leaving the bat, your body tenses up, enough to make you shoot into the sky. As the ball travels upward into the night air, your head slowly turns on a ninety-degree angle. You start to move your hands in front of your chest like the ball is already yours. As it the ball goes higher and higher, it disappears in the light of the moon. When you see the ball disappear from sight. Your arms slowly come down in disappointment. Your head begins to come back down. But in the corner of your eye you see a shinning star flying down towards you. Your instincts move your arms in front of your face as if a bullet is going to hit it. At this very moment, all time and space has ceased. In a couple of minutes, everybody will no if you were the hero of the game, or just another rookie trying to make it big.
