Mme. Loisel seemed throughout the story not to have been so lucky in life. At the same time she is selfish with her acts. Mme. Loisel is unappreciative with what she does have.
She suffered ceaselessly, feeling herself born for all the delicacies and all the luxuries. She suffered from the poverty of her dwelling, from the wretched look of the walls, from the worn-out chairs, from the ugliness of the curtains. All those things, of which another woman of her rank would never even have been conscious, tortured her and made her angry. (60).
The descriptions that Guy de Maupassant gave about Mme. Loisel made the reader feel more resentful towards her than feeling sympathy for her.
The story used an omniscient point of view. This gave the reader more insight towards the characters. Rather than giving a point of view that would limit the readers understanding towards the story by using a first or a second persons point of view. If de Maupassant did decide to use a first or a second person; the first person would give the best description out of the two. The first person would be Mme. Loisel the only problem using her point of view would be that she was more self centered. Therefore, her character would make the reader feel more sympathy.
for her rather than resentful because of her attitude towards herself. On the other hand, if de Maupassant did decide to use Mme. Loisel's husband; the story would have given the reader the most limited information the reader could get out of the characters. Her husband was an unreliable character in which he was deluded. The only information we do know about him is that he is a clerk, and he is married to Mme. Loisel.
What made "The Necklace" more intriguing was that irony was used. De Maupassant used three ironic elements in the story; which made the story also more dramatic. When irony first came in the story it was when Mme. Loisel went to the ball. "Mme.
