School Psychology

.
This field of psychology is not a new field but has taken on enough changes through the years that it is almost completely different than it was when the division was first discussed (Hynd, 1983). A lot of this change has taken place with the change in culture and the new demand for help with children that seemed to be less in years past. When the field was first created these professionals were, at times, not even required to have a Bachelors Degree and now one is declined the opportunity to hold this job if a Masters Degree cannot be presented. Because of the need for a great understanding of the educational process as well as the psychological process one often views this field as more time consuming. However, once a person reaches this level of his or her career one understands the importance of this greater understanding (Eiserer 1963). .
In order to receive a Masters degree in this field there are many requirements. These requirements are found to differ slightly from school to school but once the degree is obtained from an accredited university the degree is accepted nationwide. One example of a college with this program in action is Georgia State University. Georgia State requires a minimum of thirty-six hours usually covered in four semesters, twelve of these thirty-six are under their "Professional Studies" program and the other twenty-four are in the major field (2003). Also an accredited university, the Arlene Christian University has this program and in it requires 60 semester hours and an internship in order to graduate. This allows a person to graduate not only with a Masters in the field but also the equivalent of a specialist level degree (2003). .
In an internship, such as the one at Arlene Christian University, the student gets the opportunity to work hands on with the families and interact with the settings similar to the ones in which they will one day work themselves.
