Corporal Punishment

Corporal punishment is a very complex issue that has raised controversial beliefs in our society for many years. Corporal punishment is defined as "the use of physical force with the intention of causing a child to experience pain, but not injury, for the purpose of correction or control of the child's behavior". Parents, schools and government have varying views on whether the effects of corporal punishment are more beneficial in correcting a child's behavior or if the long-term effects are more harmful and threatening to the child. .
I was raised with the understanding that corporal punishment was a part of life. If I did something wrong, whether it was doing something I was told not to, or talking back to my parents, the punishment was usually a spanking. Whenever I was punished, I was always completely aware of the reasons and don't think it was ever abusive. Although I did not like the spankings, I think I learned to respect authority instead of constantly questioning it. Because I was raised this way and feel that I turned out okay, my attitude is that corporal punishment is okay. .
In researching this topic, my first source was my wife who has a background in early childhood education, and is considered a subject matter expert. She has a strong belief that corporal punishment can diminish a child's self-esteem. She believes that inflicting physical force upon a child can develop fear, instead of teaching the child self discipline. For example, spanking may stop inappropriate behavior for a short time, but will not teach the child how to independently control his behavior in the future. Thus, a child will be more likely to lash out and solve problems through physical means instead of using verbal communication for problem solving. A child's positive self-esteem can be dramatically altered when always worrying when he might get physically hurt again. I can see how using corporal punishment with young children can cause them to withdraw and become afraid of the person administering the punishment.
