Arthur Millers The crucible, is a play set in the early American establishment of Salem. A community whose pride is their religion, and if you are not a fully devoted Christian, you are a follower of the devil. This play tries to expose humans as self-serving destructive creatures. This statement is mostly applicable in the crucible, yet there are still glimpses of good characters. Throughout the novel there are parallels to our current world, this is one of Millers techniques, to put a mirror on society. Through the play we learn that some characters are more self-serving and destructive than others. Reverend Parris and John Procter are at either ends of the scale, yet even the more pure character shows glimpses of evil. It simply human nature.
Early on in the play the Salem girls gather in the forbidden woods, with housemaid Tituba, a black woman from the Bahamas. The girl's objective to form a love potion, and fulfil their desires. In this time a meeting like this was especially prohibited, as they were supposedly pondering spirits, and is classed as an act of witchcraft. The girls turned hysterical dancing around naked, Reverend Parris's neise Abigail Williams, had more than a love potion in mind when she vowed to drink a cup of blood for the death of Goody Procter, her lovers wife. This ceremony come to an abrupt halt when Reverend parries interrupts. When the girls notice Mr Parris, they frantically flee, such commotion and chaos causes Mr Parris's daughter Betty to faint. .
Mr Parris, now the only witness have the incident, and his daughter Betty has been in a coma for three days. The word has spread throughout Salem, the possibility of witchcraft. Mr Parris is not worried about the life of his daughter, but his reputation in the village. "But if you trafficked with spirits.

Discussion arrises of the incident, within the ministry, and Parris try to cover for himself by lying to Dan forth about what he saw that night.
