Every child should have a role model while growing up. Whether it be a sports star or a teacher, a very important part of character development is done through emulation of respected figures. The process of following the lead of a role model doesn't end in childhood though. Even grown men and women can have role models to follow and live their life by. A role model is defined as a person who serves as a model in a particular behavioral or social role for another person to emulate. That being said, there is no reason for adults to not have role models as well. .
One particular role model that people of all ages can imitate is George Washington. Our first president is a perfect example of how every American should act. He was a leader, patriot, and great president. Washington lived his life based on principles of honesty, liberty, integrity, and courage. These are qualities that every man of every faith in every country should have. Many of the world's leaders have forgotten what it is meant to live by this creed. Evil men use patriotism as an excuse for committing atrocious acts against humanity. The true meaning behind patriotism isn't about fighting against imaginary constraints, but to fight for true freedom against oppression. That is what Washington fought for. In his day there was meaning to that word. Washington took nothing for granted. He cherished his freedom and his people. No president was more loved and respected than George Washington. Even when he was told how great he was he would maintain a modest attitude. His modesty gives him my respect. To lead an army, defeat the most powerful country in the world at that time, and to become this country's first president is enough to brag about. Washington never did though. He continually refused the presidency. However, American people saw the type of man he was and insisted on it. After serving his terms, he retired to his home in Mount Vernon, NJ where he lived out the rest of his days in peace.
