Sadako

Japanese families have many different family customs. They also have many languages and religions. This paper is only about Sadako's family and friends" culture though. They live in the area of Hiroshima, where the first atomic bomb hit.
Sadako's family has many customs just inside their house. They have an alter shelf for their dead ancestors. The alter shelf has a picture of the person and some of the person's belongings. They also sleep on futons, beds that roll up to keep space. They have a tatani mat in their entranceway to wipe and put your shoes on. The girls wear silk kimonos, which are silk dresses with beautiful designs on them. Sadako's family eats rice and soup for breakfast. They have bean cakes for a special treat. Instead of saying "You eat like a pig" when someone eats fast and sloppy, they say, "You eat like little dragon." Instead of saying "You"re a slowpoke," they say, "Don't be such a turtle." They also call each other "Chan" after they say the first name of the person they are addressing. This sort of means "sweetie" in English.
Outside of the home we see some Japanese culture as well. They have many holidays. There is Peace Day, which is a memorial day that honors the people who died from the atom bombs. At night on this day families release lanterns, with the name of a relative who died in the bombs, down the Ohta River. There is also O-Ban, a death holiday and Japanese New Year. During Japanese New Year they ring bells and put up signs of good luck on top of their doors. Some good luck charms are the spider, cranes, and a blue sky.
Although there are many other factors to Japanese culture, they are not mentioned in the novel. Such as their religion-Zen Buddhism, or their language-Japanese. So as is reported, Japan is alive in culture.
