Chicago

During and after World War II many changes took place in America, but one of the most significant changes that occurred was the racial tension between blacks and whites. Chicago was especially one of the cities that experienced such extreme tensions. Many southern blacks moved into Chicago, and became mostly dominated by blacks and other minorities while whites started to move into the suburbs of Chicago. Throughout the 1940s and 1950s the black population grew more than fifty percent. With all of these people moving into Chicago there had to be more housing, and there were many houses built to accommodate all the people. At one time the city tore down slums and have public housing built in the black ghetto. Many of the blacks wanted to escape these ghettos so some of them tried to move into the white communities. When the blacks tried to move into the white communities they were often threatened to evacuate by white mobs. The blacks of Chicago had to fight for a place to live and also overcome other various racial hurdles. Hansberry does a great job depicting the Younger housing situation to the blacks" lifestyle in the 1950s; two bedrooms shared among four people or more, one kitchen with the only window in the apartment, communal bathrooms, and no backyard. Just like the reality of the 1950s, when the Younger tried to up in life by trying to live in Clybourne, a white community, Karl tried to persuade them to move elsewhere.
Throughout Chicago there were many fights that blacks had to fight. It was not easy for blacks to live in the city because everywhere they went they were faced with whites trying to get them to move out. Much of the segregation dealt with politics. With some many blacks moving into Chicago their votes made many political influences. More blacks ran for office and more than average were elected. Many blacks switched from Republicans to Democrats. Black leaders tried to avoid segregation, but white leaders were for it and also a few black leaders.
