             Possible Cause.
             The exact cause of ADHD remains illusive. ADHD is said to be a neurologically based disorder. It is a medical condition caused by genetic factors resulting in certain neurological differences. These differences may affect one, two, or several areas of the brain. These areas include the frontal lobes, inhibitory mechanisms of the cortex, the limbic system, and reticular activating system.
             Since ADHD is thought to be a neurologically based we would expect that outside of acquiring its symptoms from a head injury but the individual would have been born with the disorder. One would expect to see at least some of the symptoms noted before the age of seven. Children that are born premature are also said to show an increased incidence of ADHD and other behavior disorders.
             It is also said that the condition runs in families, although many adults do not recognize their own ADHD symptoms until their child is diagnosed. Inheritance appears to be an important factor.
             Some claim that ADHD caused by food additives, sugar, yeast or the actions of parents. There is no evidence to support these beliefs.
             The Diagnosis.
             There is no single test to diagnose ADHD. There are several types of professionals who can diagnose ADHD; this includes school psychologist, private psychologist, social workers, nurse practitioners, neurologists, psychiatrists, and other medical doctors. .
             The best way to be sure that the child has ADHD and not some other behavior problem is to see your doctor. He or she will need to see your child several times. The parents and teachers fill out special forms called rating scales. These forms will help your doctor see how often ADHD behavior happens at home, in school, and how severe these behaviors are.
             Your doctor will look at the records of you child's school performance and the information from the rating scales.
