The Titanic -- deemed as the "unsinkable ship" by Shipbuilder magazine -- was carrying about 2,227 passengers the night of April 14, 1912, when the boat struck an iceberg and began taking on water. Only 705 of the 2,227 passengers survived. It was a very unexpected accident, passengers thought at first that it was like a floating palace. The ship was 11 stories high and the length of three football fields. It had four Millionaire Suites, a swimming pool, many smoking rooms and The Café Parisien, a restaurant with the character of a French sidewalk café, was another distinguishing addition that set Titanic apart. The Titanic may have been the most luxurious ship afloat, but it, and the White Star Lines failed to keep their passengers safe on their journey from South Hampton England, to New York City.
This case revolves around the wrongful death of Hans Peder Jensen along with many others. He was 20 years old when he boarded the White Star Line's R.M.S. Titanic. He was traveling with his fiancé Carla Christine Jensen who was 19 years old. While they shared the same last name, they were not related and had not yet married. They both grew up in the town of Eskildstrup, Denmark. .
The cost of one way ticket prices on the luxury liner today would cost $50,000 for a first class parlour suite, $1724 for a first class berth, a second class ticket would cost about $690, and third class would cost $460. Carla and Hans were travelling third class.
On the 14th of April 1912, a clear moonless night brought a tragic accident, which could have been easily avoided if the White Star Line hadn't been so grossly negligent in it's operation of the RMS Titanic. The ship was travelling at full speed despite the seven ice warnings they recieved that day, and Captain Frederick Fleet spotted the iceberg straight ahead at 11:40pm when the ship was only 500 metres away. There was not enough time to avoid a collision, because the ship was travelling too quickly.
