"A woman can lift up the half of the sky. At least that is what my father told me when I asked him to tell me the story about my grandmother. Her name was Zhu Jin Lin. In Chinese, her name translates as jewelry metal and pearl. She was a short woman with a long ponytail and an amiable smile. The sun darkened her skin. Her hands were strong yet rough from the planting of rice. At times, she fished in the ocean between Taiwan and China (Fish provided food) In summer, meals always consisted of fish but in the winter she caught fish only two times a week.
She was born in 1939, a dragon year (she married) one of twelve children, a middle one. My grandfather was the oldest in his family and had one often wife who died and left him with two children. During their marriage, they had four more children. When he died, Zhu Jin raised all of the children in her own.
In the old China, all the women had to wrap her feet up tightly to ensure they could not grow larger. They thought it was the sign of beauty. My grandma suffered from that. Every time my grandma came back from the work, her feet swelled. She had no money to cure it, so she endured the pain day to day.
Even thought she was uneducated, she regarded education as important in her life. When my father entered high school. My grandma had no money to pay the tuition. My father knew the hard ship of his family, so he decided to quit and help my grandma. On the day, my father told his decision to my grandma, she scolded him and told him not to worry about the tuition, she would take care of it. The next day, she sent my father back to school and paid the tuition. My father was amazed. He wondered where did she get the money. Later on, he finally knew that she went to donate the blood and earned the tuition for him. My father promised himself he had to graduate with the highest grade and let my grandma feel pound of him.
