"" (21) There was, maybe, a quiet connection between mother and son. As he looks around at the home where Maman had evidently been so happy, with its lovely landscape, he expresses almost happily that this helped him understand her. .
A most popular accusation in the trial against Meursalt was his atheism. In many people's minds, this represents a tendency to be immoral. Meursalt merely discards religion, which is yet another exhibition of his mother's thoughts. Camus describes that "while not an atheist, Maman had never in her life given a thought to religion."" It is also very understandable, for in the time the story is set, families like the Samsas are of the lower classes who desperately depend on each other for support from the cruel world outside. In the case of the Samsas, however, their bond is not at all as much through love as through money. Kafka displays how it ended up being that after his financial failure, Mr. Samsa just took the easy way out by vegetating while Gregor supported his entire family. Though he had the chance to be truly successful as an intelligent young lieutenant with an eager demeanor, Gregor's family ties held him back to the meager job of a traveling salesman.
