Criticism of the Writings of Sandra Cisneros

She also inspires many fellow authors, as described by Bebe Moore- "In a land where our views of Hispanic people are often limited or distorted, Sandra Cisneros offers precious glimpses of the internal workings of their lives. She is an educator, unerring and relentless; she is not only a gifted writer by an absolutely essential one." Besides inspiring other authors her books have helped expand readers and students" minds as Nicholas Kanellos points out, Cisneros was, "part of an early wave of Hispanic writers who helped supply the books for the often controversial ethnic and women's studies programs added to university curriculums in the 1970s and 80s." .
Many reasons Cisneros is lauded by so many is due to her unique and powerful style of writing. In one review she was described as "a writer of power and eloquence and great lyrical beauty". Many describe Cisneros" writing in a similar manner, comparing it to poetry. Cisneros" attributes this to her use of Spanish in her upbringing and writing. She explains that writing in Spanish changes the rythym of the words. The use of Spanish when describing her Latino characters helps express a vividness of their personalities and their backgrounds in ways a translation to English could not. Although Cisneros writes in mainly English she does not make allowances for non-Spanish speaking readers when interspersing words in the Spanish language. She doesn't translate directly but when using phrases in Spanish she is sure to translate parts of the phrase in indirect ways to make the meaning clear to the reader. .
The House on Mango Street was a groundbreaking work for Cisneros. Besides being one of the most popular of her works it helped launch her career as a writer. Mango Street has become a very influential title and has since been incorporated into a large number of schools" curriculum.
