Heroism

Throughout the seeds of American history, a small number of individuals have fought, survived, or even died for the greater good of the world, despite being exposed to adversity. They are what some people would call heroes. These heroes may be struggling against society, nature, or even themselves as they continue to catch the admiring eye of onlookers. One specific hero, Carter Druse, was an independent man, who proved to be brave and loyal in the story, "A Horseman In the Sky," written by Ambrose Bierce. In the story, he joined the Union Army against his fathers" wishes, and in order to save his troops killed his father. .
Despite overwhelming family pressure, Carter Druse was able to maintain his independence. Growing up as an only child in Virginia, Druse's father was enlisted in the Confederate Army, which Carter felt was amiss. In his early teens, Carter joined the Union Army, while breaking his father's heart. "One morning he had risen from the breakfast-table and said, quietly and gravely: "Father, a Union regiment .
has arrived at Grafton. I am going to join it"" (Bierce 28). Knowing he would be at battle with his own blood, Carter felt it was wise to leave .
home. ""Well, go, sir, and whatever may occur, do what you conceive to be your duty," said his father" (Bierce 28). Carter, in some way, could sense what was about to happen.
Druse, having been able to forsee his future battle decisions, became swollen with bravery. While standing post on a high cliff, Carter watched a wandering enemy. "At that instant the horseman turned his head and looked in the direction of his concealed foeman- seemed to look into his very face, into his eyes, into his brave, compassionate heart" (Bierce 29). Having concern for human life, he could not bring himself to kill an unaware soldier. Soon after watching this strange horseman, Carter realized it was not just some casual soldier, but his father who was riding into enemy territory.
