Ball Lightning

Let me enlighten those of you who have not yet heard of ball lightning. Ball lightning is one of those great scientific enigmas that bewilders the most profound scientists. There are countless characteristics of ball lightning, so it's hard for me to describe it in a few words. In essence it is a floating spherical colored translucent-like ball that moves along the earth surface for a short period of time. .
Most people assume that ball lightning occurs during or after a thunderstorm. In some cases that is correct, but ball lightning has also been known to spontaneously transpire without the appearance of a thunderstorm. Nearly seventy percent of all ball lightning eyewitness accounts have been seen right after a lightning strike. There have also been several reports stating that ball lighting emanated from tornadoes and hurricanes. Let it be noted that during tornadoes and hurricanes, the electric fields are exceedingly high . Without any information on the occurrences of ball lighting, people would naturally assume that ball lighting would occur from the appearance of an electrical storm. But what throws their assumption off is the fact that ball lighting has been noted to occur without the detection of an electrical storm. It is just one of the many reasons that make the scientists pull their hair out. .
There are no distinct characteristics of ball lightning. The shapes of ball lightning range from spherical to oval, rectangular to cylindered, coned to dumb-belled. The most common shape is of course spherical (hence the name), and the others are very rare. The size factor of ball lightning is astonishing! It ranges from two centimeter to ten meters in diameter, with the average being around twenty centimeters . Ball lightning has been observed in all colors of the rainbow; however the most common colors are red, orange and yellow . Some of these balls are blindingly bright, whereas others have virtually no illumination and appear to have a grayish color with an average brightness of a 100-watt light bulb1.
