Critical Analysis of Spanish Civil War Letters from American

This letter strongly emphasizes the prejudicial stance held by Frankson towards the down fall of a fascist society.
The letter Mary Rolfe, a pianist and teacher from New York, wrote to Leo and Janey also portrays personal biases in regards to the fall of fascism. Rolfe talks about the importance of the "Salude" and what it means to the people of Spain who are caught up in warfare. Rolfe passionately reveals the strong spirits of those around her and their beliefs in fighting for their freedom. Rolfe's letter portrays what this fighting for freedom means to her on a more personal level, producing an account of events that are filtered through her belief system.
It is also important to point out that these letters were written during the war, and contain opinions which were not fully researched. As most of these letters were written only when there was a break in the fighting, the volunteers may not have had time to put the event that occurred in perspective. The language of the letters on a whole, suggest that the majority of them were written in a hurry. The short, choppy sentences give the impression that the contents and opinions in the letters were not fully explained, explored or put in to context.
These letters as a primary text allow historians an insight to the historical event which is more personal and allows them to see the effects the war had on people. It also allows one to contrast a variety of perspectives to create a more holistic and factual account of past events. To prove the credibility of these letters however, a variety of texts must be studied to provide evidence and back up the information that the letters hold within.
The events and attitudes revealed in these letters seem to be consistent with many other primary historical texts circling in society during the Spanish Civil War, and secondary texts which describe and account the event.
