Nobody I surveyed really knows much of anything about Greek Mythology; according to the answers to my survey. I surveyed six individuals to find the answers I was looking for. I surveyed two male sophomores in high school, one was sixteen years old, and the other was fifteen. I asked three co-workers the same questions, one was a thirty-three year old female with an associate's degree, and the other was a forty year old male with two years of college experience. The last co-worker I surveyed was a seventeen year old female high school student. The surveys with everyone went smoothly and took no time at all. .
It seems that all the answers were pretty consistent. The three people I surveyed from high school knew very few of the answers to my questions. Out of the three, none of them knew the answer to the question "Can you retell the myth of Oedipus?" None of the High School students were able to answer the question "Who was Narcissus?" Also, out of the three of them, none of them could think of answer to the question "What myth explains the natural phenomenon we call an echo?" All of them came up with an answer to the question "Can you name any books, films, or products that use mythological figures?" There answers were Lord of the Rings, Hercules (2), Mothman Prophecies, map of the stars, and Zena Warrior Princess (television series). None of them knew the answers to the other questions. They claim they were never taught them or they never heard of them anywhere. The only reason they knew the answer to the last question is because teenagers watch a lot a television these days. That is pretty much how we learn and remember things. Only one out of the three students knew the answer to the question "What is the story of the Trojan War?" That is only because he is studying it right now in school apparently. My final question was "What is the purpose of myths?" All of them knew the answer, because it is manly just an opinion.
