Waterfront Development

Located seven miles north of Downtown Rochester is Lake Ontario. Except for two beaches, a few hotdog places and a small amusement park, Rochester's waterfront is not developed and it is having a negative impact on Rochester's tourism. Who wants to come to a city that does not have anything to do along its waterfront? Three reasons why Rochester does not have a developed waterfront include the Genesee River is polluted, the port of Ontario is not protected properly from nature and that attempts to develop the waterfront in the past have failed.
One of the major reasons Rochester's waterfront is not developed is the pollution of the Genesee River. Poor choices have affected the water quality in the Genesee River and the mouth of Lake Ontario and its beaches. At one time the city's sewer system ran right in to the river. Kodak used to drain all their waste into the river too. In 1970 University of Rochester scientist George Berg was quoted as saying, "Because of pollution, Rochester is losing Lake Ontario and Irondequoit Bay. Since then cleaning up the Genesee and Lake Ontario has been a high priority. Kodak built its own water treatment plant and the water that is put back into the river is as clean as what it took out. The city has enclosed an enclosed sewer system that goes to a treatment plant. Although great strides have been made there is still more work that needs to be done.
The second reason for the lack of waterfront development is the lack of protection along the shore line and a half mile up the river during major storms. During a major storm there is a lake surge of 6 feet that goes down the river. That would cause damage to businesses in the area. Starting in the year 2000 steps have been taken by the Army Engineers to curtail this problem and has enabled the city to start developing the Port of Rochester again.
The third reason why the waterfront is not developed is that other development projects in the past have failed.
