Working Women

Work is giving them a feeling of mastership and leadership. A study done in University of California in 1990 proved that work is really beneficial for the psychological health. Scientists studied 140 women for 22 years and noticed that at the age 43 home workers had more chronic conditions and seemed more disillusioned and frustrated. Work gave for women an opportunity to have wider social contacts and connections to the world. Those contacts and connections are very important because people can not get them at home (Barnett, and Rivers, The Myth 185). .
In short, paid employment raises self-esteem in women and has a big influence on their mental and physical health. On the contrary the unemployment is the main factor which causes depression and physical problems in women.
There was another myth in society that women's work is affecting negatively the family relationships. It was believed that women experience plenty of stress at work. Psychologists Sandra Scarr and Deborah Phillips reviewed 80 studies on this subject and found out that lives of females who work are even less stressful than those who do not. Researches found out that working woman spend an average of 50 hours a week at the job place. House wives work about 80 hours a week at home (Barnett, and Rivers, The Myth 185). So, it can be stated that house wives could be more tired and stressed out than working women. It leads to conclusion that working women could perform even better than housewives in their family lives.
Researches also show that maternal employment does not directly harm the development of children. Almost in all cases children of working and not working females did not differ in development. Moreover, researches show that children of employed mothers have an ability to interact easier in different situations and have less behavior problems. The children have less stereotyped worldviews as well. These differences appear because in the families where mothers work fathers tend to spend more time with children.
