How the Irish Saved Civilization

Day by day, the Roman Empire was losing pieces of evidence that made them who they are. The Barbarians were just like all the European countries in that they thought Ireland was very weak so they didn"t even bother worrying about them. Well they proved everyone wrong. The Irish, who were just starting to become literate, copied any book they could get their hands on in an attempt to save the civilization. They were able to copy a lot of western literature, which enabled the next generation to have knowledge of their predecessors. If not for the Irish, there would have been no books, and it would have been like the past had never happened. It's just like trying to live in the world today with no recollection of what happened for the last few generations. No one would know what to do and mistakes would be repeated. So the Irish, although weak and futile, played a big role in saving civilization.
             I think Cahill did a very good job in explaining the way in which the Irish were able to actually save civilization. I was able to get a very good understanding of the Irish due to the fact that Cahill talked about their beliefs and how they were starting to believe in Christianity. He also delved into their literature which also gives a good example of the way they lived their lives and the way they feel about certain things. .
             The only thing that I really disliked about the book was that I don"t think Cahill spent enough time talking about the actual saving of civilization. Being that the book is named, "How the Irish Saved Civilization," I figured a bit more emphasis would be put on that subject rather than talking about the pagan Celtics for instance. They really didn"t factor in as much as the Irish or the Romans, so I don"t think that Cahill should have put that much time into talking about them. But besides that, I think Cahill did a superior job in explaining in detail all about what was going on during this time.
