Several religious denominations exist throughout the country. Among these are the Adventists, Evangelists, Catholics, Baptists, Jehovah Witnesses and Mormons. Most of these churches are centered on the teachings and beliefs in the Jesus Christ ant the Bible. Thus, Christianity is the most prominent religion in Belize.
Although most Belizeans are Christians several churches exist each with its distinct principles and beliefs. Catholics believe in seven sacraments. The sacrament of Confession or Reconciliation being the most debated one. Other churches don't. Catholics believe in saints and having statues. They believe in praying the rosary and honoring Mary. Other churches condemn these practices.
Throughout the years Christianity has become divided - thus the appearance of many churches. Probably one to the many reasons is the interpretation of the Bible, along with personal greed for power and fame. Many so called pastors and preachers quite often address their congregation with words of criticism and condemnation towards other churches. Quite often pastors, because they are considered ministers or religious leaders are privileged with houses and other modern conveniences. Thus the urge to have a strong, large congregation exists. So they begin preying on other persons, attracting them to their churches.
In some instances these churches do cooperate on national issues. For example, the call for decrease in violence and crime has had the full support of all churches in Belize. The issue of child abuse and neglect has been fully supported by all religious denominations in our country. But the reality is that churches quite often compete against one another, the main reason being to have a large flock. All churches in Belize would like to be number one, because each church believes in being the true church that will lead its people to God and eternal salvation. Each church believes in having the correct principles to live a good life with moral values, a life as established by the teachings of Jesus Christ.
