"Pre-alcoholic phase" is when someone starts to "drink on occasion" as a "social drink" or for "relief" and the person starts to build up a "high tolerance."(Wrangham) The second phase is "prodomal phase" and this is when "blackouts begin; sneaking drinks; guilt develops, but is quickly dismissed; and the amount is usually still controllable."(Wrangham) The third phase is the "crucial phase," which is when "drinking sets up a chain reaction; explanations become necessary in why the person is drinking heavily; and life is alcohol centered. The fourth phase is the "chronic phase," which means "alcohol tolerance decreases; there is a cycle of binging and detoxing and then repeating the same cycle; and suicide attempts."(Wrangham).
