Hegemony is the intellectual and moral authority that must be established by a ruling class for effective rule. They use this to tell people things that aren't true but the people believe them. In this book a man named Winston Smith works for Big Brother. Near the beginning he destroys document about a man named Comrade Withers that betrayed Big Brother, so what he had to do was completely erase him from the history of Oceania, the name of the land that they live on. " people who have incurred the displeasure of the Party simply disappeared and were never heard of again" pg. 40. All Winston did was replace Wither with another person that was loyal to Big Brother. Obviously Big Brother fears rebellion, just like all people with power, and anyone that rebels is dealt with by being vaporizes. They are totally erased from everybody's memory and therefore never existed. When big Brother tell the people that Comrade Withers never existed, of course they are going to believe them because Big Brother is never wrong. Near the end of the book Big Brother begins to say that two plus two equals five and everyone believes them. Big Brother has what they call Thoughtpolice that deal with the people that commit Thoughtcrime. When someone commits thought crime the Thoughtpolice go after them. They are always taken by the thought police at night, usually in their sleep. .
