What Cops See And Know

"justice" is always hostage to the vagaries of jurisdiction, judicial perceptions, whims, or ideologies, and even the time of day" (Investigating Criminal Violence, Robert Jackall). Lastly, and perhaps the most difficult of their responsibilities is criminal investigators are expected to remain professional at all times. Scott Mckee showed slides of many child abuse cases with explicit examples of wounds that the parent had inflicted. Criminal investigators deal with the strenuous task of not taking the law in to their own hands. This is especially hard for officers because, many officers have their own children and they must try and detach themselves from the situation.
Canines serve many positive purposes that make them an essential asset to the police department. Canines have acute senses which help officers complete their job in a quick, efficient, and effective manner. The canines are highly trained to follow specific commands from the officer that owns them. The canines provide as a partner to the officers and aid them in foot chases, drug cases, and locating murder weapons and suspects. The officers from the Springfield canine unit spoke of a specific case where the suspect had been caught, but previous to his arrest he had thrown the murder weapon in the woods. The officers let the canine loose to find the evidence and in a matter of minutes the canine found a semi automatic in a pile of leaves. A second example of the role that canine's have is Jason Maloney's description of being assaulted by a man he was chasing and Ricky bit the man until he gave up and let go. Canines often provide as scare tactics to criminals and a canine is instructed to find the criminal and bark and when the criminal is found by the dog they usually give up because, of the fear of being bitten. Canines are valuable to their owners as well as to the Police Department with their many abilities to protect and serve the officer they are assigned to.
