As humans we, often wonder "Is God really real?" This question has gotten more difficult in the past week and a half. As Americans we are asking about God - if He is real, why did this happen? Why me? Why the United States? As a Christian, I believe that there is a plan and that good will prevail through this tragic event. Still yet, the question of God's existence goes back several thousand years. .
Many people do not believe in God. People believe only in tangible things, what they can touch or see, not looking beyond that. When something amazing happens, for example, when someone who is injured and not expected to make it, lives people deny that the reason is God. They give all the credit to doctors and medicine. These things help, but God is involved too. People turn to facts and theories, not beliefs. Sometimes I wonder how people can assume that they just appeared. .
People often believe that Christians believe in God for our own sake. Bertrand Russell points out in "Fee Man's Worship," that those who believe need to worship to make us feel better about ourselves. Russell also gives his opinion that God may be real, but that there are other gods too, such as Greek gods. He asserts Christians cannot be selfish and believe that God is the only one around. Another point that he brings up is that people only believe in something (God) out of fear. By believing, we gain the comfort of someone forgiving us and having something in control. Russell states that when the world or our lives are over, then it is just over, nothing after it. He is saying that gods are not real they are just in our minds and when our minds are gone they are too. .
As Christians we do believe in God and that He is ever-present. The issue of knowing that He is the real thing comes up a lot. This is not something that is a positive act of faith, but as humans, we undoubtedly do question why we believe.
