Vitamin C

Vitamin C is a water-soluble antioxidant whose primary job is to aid the immune system in fighting off aqueous peroxyl radicals that invade the body and destroy human lipids such as collagen (Wan). In humans, vitamin C is absorbed by an active transport system located in the gut and then reabsorbed through the kidneys (Crafts). The system depends on the water found in all the cells of the human body (Crafts). Being a water soluble vitamin, Vitamin C, can reach every cell in the body and when it is not used it can be passed out of the body through urine and sweat opposed to a fat soluble vitamin that when not used gets stored in the body as fat.
Vitamin C assists the immune system in two of its many functions. It aids in the expulsion infections and the monitoring of the body system for any sign of tumor cells. It accomplishes this task by stimulating the production of neutrophils. Neutrophils are white blood cells produced by the immune system to fight off foreign antigens (Wan). Vitamin C also triggers the production of antibodies and interferon, proteins produced by the immune system, which aid in fighting off viral infections and caner cells.
As a component of collagen, vitamin C aids the immune system beyond the biochemical aspect. Our skin, which is primarily made up of collagen, is the body's first .
line of defense against bacterial and viral infections. Vitamin C provides the stability in the collagen of the skin to ward off any invaders. .
Vitamin C protects the DNA of the cells from the damage caused by free radicals and mutagens (Wan). As an antioxidant, vitamin C neutralizes free radicals in the human body. Free radicals enter the body seeking a free electron to gain stability. The free radicals take electrons from the body causing certain parts of the body to fail due to electron deficiency. Vitamin C provides the free radical with the electron it wants while helping the immune system produce glutathione peroxidase, a free radical fighting enzyme (Wan).
