Violence And The Media

Music has even been contaminated by television. Music to dance to has become music to watch. The music video has corrupted an already deteriorating form of entertainment. And the same could be said of sports. Because of television, professional wrestling, which has always been a parody of the real sport, has become even more bizarre. The market share on TBS and the USA Cable Network is larger for wrestling than for recognized athletic events. Because of TV, the audience has become accustomed to seeing displays of outrageous behavior. Instead of nicknames like "Magic- Johnson and "Doctor J,"" we increasingly see names like "Diesel,"" "The Sniper,"" and "AK47-. The marked increase in violence in such sports as ice hockey, football, and even in basketball is a result of audience enthusiasm for circuses. This can be directly related to the penetration of television into all visual experiences. The vocabulary used in sports now includes "late hit-, "good fight-, "slam dunk-, "hit men-, "clear the bench-, and other terms rooted in violence. And prior to the 1980s, blood was rarely ever seen in a professional wrestling match. But now the drawing of blood is quite common. The blood is meant to make the fight appear more real, but yet it is rarely ever from a legitimate wound. Usually it is from an incision, which the wrestler has inflicted on his own forehead with a small razor that he carries in his mouth, wristband, or tights. And often the referees and managers also carry a blade in case it falls out of the wrestlers clothing, or there is nowhere for him to keep it in his costume. The wrestler has exercised enough and his blood is pumping fast enough so that just a small prick will end up covering his face with what is called "juice- in the trade. Wrestlers' foreheads are often dotted with scar tissue. .
             - Almost all of the technological advances in the broadcasting industry have been concerned with transporting violent images more effectively.
